Christopher M. Shaw, MD

Dr. Shaw is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and the operative and non-operative treatment of sports injuries affecting the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, foot and ankle.

He earned his medical degree from the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. After completing a year of general surgery training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. He then completed fellowships in sports medicine through the Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Clinic of Kansas City/UMKC and in hip arthroscopy and preservation surgery at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. During his fellowship training, Dr. Shaw worked alongside the medical teams for the Kansas City Chiefs under the mentorship of Dr. Cris Barnthouse and the Cleveland Browns under Dr. James Voos.

Dr. Shaw has advanced training in hip preservation surgery, knee ligament reconstruction, cartilage restoration, and minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures. His clinical interests include ACL injuries and repair, meniscus and knee ligament injuries, cartilage restoration, hip labral tears, shoulder instability, rotator cuff repair, and biologic treatments to help preserve joint function. He is one of only a few surgeons in the Kansas City area who performs ACL repair surgery and is the only orthopaedic surgeon in the region who is a member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Shaw serves as Director of the UMKC Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship and is the team orthopaedist for Sporting Kansas City and UMKC Athletics. He is passionate about educating the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and has authored multiple textbook chapters used in orthopaedic education across the United States and internationally. He became board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2017.

Dr. Shaw is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Professional Soccer Physicians Society, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society (ICRS), the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
