L. Nathan Gause, MD, MBA

L. Nathan Gause, MD, MBA, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at University Health specializing in foot and ankle surgery. He cares for patients with a wide range of conditions, including ankle arthritis, bunions and other forefoot deformities, flatfoot and cavovarus deformities, tendon disorders, sports-related injuries, and complex foot and ankle conditions. His approach emphasizes understanding each patient’s goals, explaining both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options, and developing an individualized plan to restore mobility and function.

Dr. Gause completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati and fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery at Campbell Clinic and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He serves as Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is actively involved in the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and other health professionals.

In addition to his orthopaedic practice, Dr. Gause serves as Chief Population Health Officer and Medical Director of Patient Experience at University Health. His work in these roles focuses on improving access to care, patient experience, health outcomes, and the systems that support patients throughout their healthcare journey. He earned his MBA from the UMKC Bloch School of Management, complementing his clinical background with expertise in healthcare leadership, operations, and strategy.

Dr. Gause’s academic and professional interests include foot and ankle reconstruction, ankle arthritis, surgical outcomes, population health, and the ways social drivers of health influence musculoskeletal care. He is also committed to mentorship and expanding opportunities for students interested in careers in medicine and orthopaedic surgery.

Outside of work, Dr. Gause enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, mentoring students, and serving the Kansas City community.
